In 2006, Natron Nordic launched Boulder Nordic Sport, expanding into nordic specialty retail and stone-grinding operations. In addition to the store in Boulder, Colorado; on-line retail at natronnordic.com and the stone-grinding operation, Natron Nordic organizes cross-country skiing camps across the US, Argentina and New Zealand as well as offering personal coaching services to clients. Natron Nordic also collaborates with the US Ski Team to help organize their National Coaches Conference.

Cross-country skiing is our passion and it's all we do. The knowledge we have gained through years of racing, coaching, race service and running events is constantly growing and we're excited to share it to help make the sport more fun and accessible.

We are fully equipped to perform extraordinary service on your winter sports equipment. We have extensive experience in Nordic Stone Grinding and Alpine base and edge preparations. Over the past 20 years we have developed a set of integrated automated and hand tuning processes to deliver consistently exceptional base preparations. Our tuning machinery is state of the art, but this equipment is really only a supplement to our old world hand craftsmanship.

Having the best equipment and knowing how to use it are often different things: One of our former employees was fond of the saying "Talk is cheap, but whiskey costs money." With this in mind, we interact with a group of regional test pilots who put our base preparations to use in the real world throughout the season. These folks range from racer types and coaches to instructors and recreational skiers. They keep us on the straight and true and aren't shy about letting us know what works and what doesn't.

Our store is located at 2733 Main Street,
Lake Placid, NY
http://highpeakscyclery.com/

Only two blocks down from the famous Olympic Center which played host to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games.

High Peaks Cyclery uses a cutting edge Wintersteiger Sigma RS 350 computer controlled stone grinder. In our extensive database are structures developed by The Austrian Ski Team, the major ski manufacturers and Wintersteiger. These structures have been proven over many World Cup seasons to be reliably fast for their intended conditions. We can recreate these exact structures on your personal skis so that you may have the same advantage as World Cup skiers. By specifying the snow type, temperature and humidity we can tune your skis to perform their best. Having several skis prepared for different conditions means you’ll always have a pair that will be optimal for whichever conditions you encounter on race day. In addition, having skis optimized for different conditions cuts down on the amount of specific waxing you have to do.

If you are undecided as to the exact conditions you’d like to target, you can choose a “Universal” structure. Although not as specialized, these should work well in conditions you are likely to see in your everyday skiing. Choose “Universal Warm” for temperatures in the low 20’s and above, with snow that forms a snowball easily. “Universal Cold” is for temperatures in the low twenties and below, with snow that resists packing.

We started Gear West Ski & Run 16 years ago because of our passion for XC skiing. Now, because of your support, we have become the largest performance ski store in the United States. Be it competition or touring under the stars, grinding up the last hill at the American Birkebeiner, ski joring with your dogs or coaching a high school team ... whatever your love of the sport is, we are here to support it. Gear West exists because of your enjoyment of skiing and we strive to give you the kind of service that makes you enjoy working with us as well.

What separates Gear West from all other XC ski stores is our commitment to finding you the best ski equipment possible. To do that, we stock more performance XC Ski inventory than any retail and web store in the United States.

Please visit, call 1-877-437-GEAR (4327) or email us with questions. When you support us you also support the ski community. Through money, equipment and time we support many high school teams, races, women's ski weekends, youth skiers in financial need, the Mora Vassloppet, the City of Lakes Loppet in Minneapolis, American Birkebeiner fund raisers, ski joring clubs and much much more. This is what our specialty business is all about.

A note from Mark Waechter

We're not virtual people. I run the shop. I do all the grinding and ski work, ski testing and selection. It's primarily a one-man show at Ultratune though Margaret helps out with ski testing in the winter and helps around the store a little.

Margaret has a Master's Degree in Exercise Science and is an ACSM certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist. She has a full time job doing cardiac rehab. She also does some coaching (skiers and cyclists) and athlete testing.

Our pictures (mine and Margaret's) are sprinkled throughout the website.

My professional background includes a long time spent as a research, design, and development engineer (aerospace, medical, commercial), primarily designing electronics (sensors, circuits, systems) but also some mechanisms, algorithms, etc, with more than a dozen international patents. I have a strong background in the techy stuff. I'm also a skier and cyclist. I've worked as a ski tech at the world cup level, and have a lot of experience with ski testing and prep. I try to make the preparation of fast skis a science as well as an art. I love what I'm doing at Ultratune and it keeps me fully occupied!
